16. Love, Fans and Friendship
The price of fame – or life on the road, at least – is the difficulty in maintaining and sustaining long-term friendships and relationships outside of your band and the fans and faces that you see along the way.
I like to be approachable when it comes to fans, and I chat and mingle at meet-and-greets after my shows for as long as I can, which means that I do get to know not only faces, but names and the life stories of those who follow me and travel around the country to hear my music, which is a nice thing to be able to do for as long as I can keep it up.
I take my relationship with my fans very seriously and communicate with them in every way possible, especially through social media, which I try to update daily when I can. I also have a very reliable and trustworthy friend, Denise Frazer, who looks after the modern-day equivalent of a fan club. Denise and I meet once a month and decide on news output, which she then compiles into a newsletter and emails it out to an established database, plus, I take the time to sign cards and read letters that have come to her for my attention, always doing my best to send a personal response as far as I possibly can.
Another family I have become close to are three generations of the Nolan family – Leanne, Pamela and Evelyn – who have been with me from the very first gig in Ireland. Leanne now runs my website and the Nathan Carter app which tells fans dates of gigs, news and other exclusive stuff that can only be found out when you sign up to it. I’m delighted now to be able to call these people who work closely with me my friends, and I really appreciate everything they do.
Some of the fans are very creative and, as well as tattoos, one young lady, twelve-year-old Cara Cronly, caught my eye online recently when she had a ‘Nathan and Jake’ manicure in preparation for my concert, with tiny pictures of me and my brother on her fingernails. The story of this even made the pages of VIP magazine, which was pretty impressive.
I think, no matter what business you work in, and no matter how many people there are in your life to turn to, there can never be enough, and I know that I have many people to call very good friends. One of the people I have come to know and trust is Father Brian D’Arcy. I know I can talk to him about anything. As well as being there for me on a personal level, Father Brian is a great sounding board for new songs or ideas, and I know he has helped a lot of people in the country-music business by listening and giving out some good advice when it’s asked for.
There’s great camaraderie in the country-music scene – a bit
